List of Governmental institutions to know while working and living in Lithuania

There are various Governmental services which are important to know about, if you are planning to work and live in Lithuania.

Social insurance & health care system (also known as SODRA) https://www.sodra.lt/ :

Once you have formally signed a work contract you will be able to receive all the public medical services for free. Register yourself in the nearest “Poliklinika” a health care clinic and choose a family doctor.

Also you get covered for sickness insurance, unemployment insurance, occupational insurance, pension and maternity insurance as well.

Lithuanian Public Employment Service (https://uzt.lt/) :

Also known as “Užimtumo tarnyba” is responsible for public employment service in Lithuania and implementing labor market policies.

The agency provide various services for free of cost; such as Information and counselling, Individual employment plans, subsidized employment and many more.

VMI (Valstybinė mokesčių inspekcija) https://www.vmi.lt :

Starting an enterprise or declaring the taxes the government state tax agency “VMI” regulates and manages them.

The main taxes applied to the employees are as follow:

  • State social insurance (Sodra taxes): 19.5%
  • Personal income tax: 20% or 32% *(depends on the gross salary)
  • Pension: 2% (optional)
